Wayne Snow is a true soul reformer: Influenced by the canon of African and African-American music legends such as Fela Kuti and Marvin Gaye via King Sunny Ade to Sade, Sun Ra and contemporary Afrofuturism, he has carved out his own niche. His sound combines influences from neo-soul, Afrobeat, hip-hop, jazz, electronica and various synth-based styles, combined with soulful falsetto vocals.
The Nigerian-born and Berlin based musician, soul singer and producer is a central figure in Berlins burgeoning Future Jazz/Neo Soul scene, as part of the Moe Fabrik he was instrumental in the emergence of Nu Jazz. Significant impetus came from collaborations with jazz musician and DJ Max Graef, with whom he wrote the songs "Under The Moon" and "Red Runner" for the Red Runner EP, released via Tartelet Records. Collaborations with Italian producer Mop Mop, Italian-German electronic duo Nu Genea or Parisian producers such as Neue Grafik and Darius also brought him a lot of attention.
Two great albums have been released so far, Freedom TV (2017) and Figurine (2021). Figurine, for example, is a vibrant burst of energy and colour. With a great deal of refinement for timbre and rhythm, for the purposeful use of effects, vocals and instruments, Snow has designed something entirely his own here.
We expect new music from Wayne Snow at any time. Until then, we will listen to Figurine again and again.
