GHOST FUNK ORCHESTRA
GHOST FUNK ORCHESTRA
Ghost Funk Orchestra (Colemine /US) *live*
Ghost Funk Orchestra (GFO) is the brainchild of composer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. What started as a one-man recording project has now evolved into a powerhouse live band.
Musically, GFO is a sonic kaleidoscope: Soul, psych-rock, salsa, and more blend with psychedelic elements, lush horn arrangements, and unpredictable time changes. The band delivers hypnotic grooves, warm vintage tones, and cinematic tension arcs, ranging from soft and dreamy to explosive and driving. Live, this translates into an intense interplay of dense instrumental passages, sweat-inducing funk breaks, and charismatic vocals, creating an energetic, immersive whirlwind.
Since their founding, GFO has evolved across multiple albums from tropical-tinged psychedelic soul to a more narrative-driven ensemble with intricate, layered arrangements. A Song For Paul still thrives on earthy, handcrafted grooves, A New Kind of Love unfolds an opulent soundscape hovering between exotica, soul, and soundtrack-inspired textures, and A Trip to the Moon fuses vintage sounds with sci-fi elements into a cinematic journey full of psychedelic funk, exotic textures, and surf-rock vibes – arranged like an orchestral audio drama.
Their unique blend of genres has attracted praise from the likes of NPR, Bandcamp, KUTX, Brooklyn Vegan, Earmilk, and more. Over the years they've had the honor of sharing the stage with the likes of Os Mutantes, Grace Potter, Marco Benevento, La Luz, Monophonics, The Nude Party, and The Jack Moves, as well as playing such legendary festivals as Montreal Jazz, Treefort, Telluride Jazz, Otis Mountain Get Down, and BRIC's NYC Winter Jazz.
Local NY blog Post-Trash described their sound as a ‘psych odyssey of traditional sounds delivered in a non-traditional fashion.’ Bandcamp’s Editorial Director J. Edward Keyes praised the band’s ability to ‘leave no funk-adjacent genre unexplored.’ Experimentation is the key, and unpredictability is what has been attracting folks from all corners of the globe to see what GFO pulls off next…
